Bio:

Hank Griffith

Hank base

Name: Henry Griffith

Age: 35

Birthplace: Seattle

Sex: Male

Occupation: Sculptor/Artist

Appearance: At 6'4", Hank tends to loom over a lot of people. The regular smile on his face, echoed by laughter lines at the corner of his brown eyes lessens the impact of his height. Combined with his broad shoulders and muscled athlete's body, Hank seems to be the epitome of the gentle giant. His brown hair is kept short, the simplest way for him to keep his wild curls under control. His hands bear the occasional scar from slips of the carving knife, and his skin is tanned from constant exposure to the outdoors. Hank tends to wear smart casual. Polo shirts, vests and jeans typically. He's not quite meterosexual, but he obviously pays attention to his appearance and his wardrobe. If he's in the studio then it's tank tops and beat up workman's trousers.

Personality: Hank is the dependable one, always has been. Hall monitor in school, good grades and head of the track team. With his dad encouraging him, it only made sense for him to become a cop. Hank is a caretaker, if he see's someone in trouble he wants to fix it somehow. He may not always be the 'take charge' guy, but he's always the guy that will pick up the pieces.

Special abilities/talents: Hank is practiced in both boxing and Aikido. He is also an artist, working in wood carving and pottery.

Supernatural Affinity: Shaman
Species/Group: Human
Power(s): Healing: Hank can sense levels of physical, emotional and spiritual energy in places and people. Major healings are done through trance work (that is, RP). Awareness of the spirit world. Bird Mother has begun teaching him magic, typically based around protective warding. As a low level medium, Hank can sense the dead, but rarely see them or interact
Level: N/A
Affiliation: Hank's totem is the Bird Mother, a Raven spirit whose appearance shifts from a young woman, to a pregnant woman, to an old crone like being. Or... it's a raven.
Preferred Prey: Hank keeps an eye on the spirit realms. He knows not all spirits are helpful and friendly, and some can be downright dangerous to humans. He tries to keep them under control in the places he lives.

History: Hank grew up in Seattle, went to school there, graduated there and joined the police force there. His father was a cop, and his mother was a librarian. As a child, he showed an eye for art and a creative spark that his mother tried to nurture. His father squashed that. Hank was going to be good at sports, learn how to box and join the force, just like him.

And for twelve years, that's what Hank did. He had made it to a detective slot in the Seattle P.D.'s homicide division before his world changed. Near the end of a shift one Saturday, a call went out of shots fired in a park nearby to where he was. When Hank got there, he found the shooter was an officer. The uniformed man was hunkered down in the park bandstand and had started taking shots at bystanders. Hank tried to talk the officer down, and as he approached the bandstand steps, the crazed man shot him. His disbelief at the shot was swallowed by pain ripping through his stomach. Before he blacked out, Hank managed one lucky shot. The bullet took the other cop in the head, the last thing Hank saw was the corpse falling.

The next thing he saw were branches. His vision cleared slowly as everything came back to him. He was lying in the grass, he was cold and he knew something had happened. Sirens blaired in the background and his first instinct was to see what was wrong. His aborted attempt a sitting up reminded him. His eyes focused on a dark shape in the branches above, one that grew closer. Weight on his chest molded into the cold settling into his bones. Then the raven started talking to him. When the paramedics got there, Hank was sitting up, his arms holding pressure on a much smaller wound. He'd healed himself, taken a walk into the spirit world and come back changed and whole.

During the inquiry, it came out that the shooter had been mentally unstable for a while. Something that was somehow overlooked during recruitment and training. Something had tipped him over the edge into full blown insanity. The city settled for a not entirely modest sum. Hank was a hero, he was financially comfortable and was also scarred. His reaction to the shooting took time. Hank the caregiver wouldn't take care of himself. He quit the force, after he found being near guns made him lash out. After a year of therapy he could see a gun or hear it on TV without his body reacting, he still couldn't bring himself to fire one. During therapy, Hank rediscovered his childhood spark for creating things. He started carving wood, listening to what was locked inside the lumber waiting for expression. Soon enough his work started finding success. Hank learned about the spirit world of the city. Where it sickened, where it flourished and what other beings lived within it. The soul of the city revealed itself to him but it never embraced him. This city wasn't his, the land he walked on was tended by others.

Realising he needed to find a place that was his, Hank started looking at his options. There was no reason to stay in Seattle beyond familiarity. You can be an artist - and a shaman - anywhere. Maybe somewhere less 'city' would help? With the money from his artwork and the settlement, Hank bought a new home. A studio and house in a town called Mysteria.

Flaws: Something about Hank's energy just makes him irresistible to supernaturals. Not surprisingly, this is nowhere near a good thing. His pleasing aura makes his flesh and blood extra-tasty to those spirits and other creatures whom prey on the life force of others.

Hank just wants to help. Everyone. All the time. He's too soft-hearted for his own good, as Bird Mother keeps on telling him. He's a push over for a sob-story and he'll do whatever is in his power to make sure people are safe and cared for.

After the shooting incident, Hank developed post-traumatic stress disorder. Over time and with therapy the symptoms have reduced, but he's never addressed the cause. Hank can't handle guns, or hearing live fire. Raven insists he needs to deal with it. Hank is equally insistent that he's fine.

Merits: Hank's connection to the world has resulted in his having a greater surplus of life energy. This gives him a pleasing aura. People and supernatural beings feel physically and emotionally better when he's around.

Hank's story got around, he was a hero in Seattle for a time. His reputation means friends on the police force will still put in a good word for him with any local authorities.

Unlike his totem, Hank never ruffles a feather. He's largely unflappable, his calmness under fire extending to most circumstances. Hank can still be suprised, but he'll rarely lose his cool.
